What is a Linocut print?
Print – A mark or impression made by the pressure of one thing on another. It is very important for an art collector to know the difference between a commercial print and a fine art print. The answer to this question has become more complex. The improvement of mechanical printing processes, the development of computer printing (glicee) and other photomechanical processes make the term “print” an increasingly confusing term. Both commercial prints and fine art prints fit this definition. The difference is: Commercial prints are manufactured by making “copies” of an original work using a mechanical process. Although an image may be labeled as a “limited edition” a commercial print is usually reproduced thousands of times. A fine art print can be defined as a piece of artwork of which more than one of the same image may be made, but are executed one by one, exclusively by the artist, making each individual image an original, and unique in its own way. Due to the process and the limited life of the plate, an “edition” of a fine art print usually remains very small, generally ranging from as few as 5 to as many as 100.
